1.)Well THAT was a surprise! An animated feature for fun-loving, movie-loving adults. How do I know?

* The dialogue: Our hero talks like George Clooney talking like Clark Gable in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" so pay close attention!
* Homages to classics from "Star Wars" to "Singin' in the Rain."
* The music has everything from yodeling during a chase scene (with toilet paper trailing from a shoe) to Ride of the Valkyries during an aerial attack.
* The Spirit of the West (in an Alabaster Chariot) is a serape-clad Clint Eastwood in a white golf cart with a bunch of Oscars tossed in the back.
* The line dance of the townspeople on Main Street is done to Cool Water by what sounds like the Sons of the Pioneers.
* A Greek Chorus/Mariachi Band which explains the action, consists of four little cactus owls.
* The hawk that terrorizes the town has a partial silver beak, a la Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou.
* One of the townspeople has a crackly voice like Pat Buttram from the old Roy Rogers movies.
* The snake is waaaay too scary for children even though it is clearly patterned after the one from the "Harry Potter" franchise.

2.)While still not my favorite film featuring Johnny Depp, this little film does everything a great Depp film should do...
* Bring out Classic themes: A pet who pretends to be different characters...
* Exploration: In this case~ it explores the nature of reality, and even morality...
* Humor: Old vs. Young, Newcomers vs. Familiar Community Members, Outsiders and Insiders....

It's not a film that I would recommend for small kids, but is a film I would recommend for kids 9+
It's a great film ~ both classic, in it's ability to be real, strange, and questioning.

3.) Very fun fast moving animation with a story along the lines of China Town with Jack Nicholson. No incest or anything but a very rich old fellow trying to monopolize the water game in a desert city. There is an incredible fear and loathing las Vegas reference in the beginning as well!

1.) I passed on this movie when it originally released for whatever reason, I think I was just too busy at the time to go see movies.

I decided to rent it from Amazon because I found out some of my favorite designers were involved with this project, including Iain McCaig, and I also learned of the IP's history, of the original novel The Princess of Mars and thought it sounded incredibly interesting. It amazed me that someone could come up with a story like this in 1912.

This movie was no disappointment. I have no idea why when this movie originally released in theaters, it 'bombed' relative to its production budget. This is one of the best action sci-fi's I have ever seen. The story is very good, the character, creature, vehicle designs are amazing, the setting and atmosphere is fantastic, the VFX is top-notch.... I really don't understand why it didn't do well in the box office... Bad marketing? I'll be buying this on Blu-Ray and re-watching it from time to time for years to come.

2.) Based on many negative reviews I have read, the ERB Purists are upset with departures from the written Barsoom trilogy. And, in this respect, the movie DOES fall short. Honestly though--speaking for myself--I cannot recall even a single book-based movie over which I did not prefer the book. A single movie cannot HOPE to give visual life to all the details of even ONE story, much less multiple stories.

Which brings us to the realist--the one who, having read the book(s), nevertheless appreciates the limitations of the motion picture medium, and makes the best of it.

3.) I went in to "John Carter" filled with trepidation. I often avoid these big, splashy CGI spectacles that never live up to their promises and I was sure that this film was going to be nothing more than lots of cinematic eye candy and short on substance. Added to that there was a lot of lackluster critical reviews. Well, all I can say is that this was a grand entertainment and I am so glad I caught it on the big screen!

I've heard some critics say the plot was a mess and overly convoluted. Really? My suggestion to them is "don't text while watching a movie, you might miss something". I found the plot fairly well done and actually made sense (if only the last Star Trek film had that going for it) and was interesting to boot.

I also read that the look of Barsoom (Mars to you and me) was dull and uninteresting. Hmmm, never been an admirerer of the stark and raw beauty of the American southwest I guess. Personally I found Barsoom to be beautiful, alien, exotic and familiar all at the same time. After all, the Mars rovers have confirmed that the Red Planet does indeed look like our American southwest and I for one happen to think both places very scenic.

1.) I laughed. A lot. And the movie wasn't even for me!
My kids enjoyed it immensely and it is true to the nature of Pooh. All very sweet, very well meaning fun.
I thought I would take a nap while they watched the movie but I got into it and enjoyed it right alongside them.
Winnie the pooh feels like childhood should. Adventurous, hilarious, silly and safe.
I'm glad we watched it and I'd watch it again if requested.

2.) It was a nice effort to recapture what made 1977's The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh so great. It hit some of the nostalgia targets, and was a decent story line based on the stories from the books. It was updated, so the jokes were slightly more edgy than earlier versions - whether that is because the audience was expected to be older, or because they are the children of the 21st century, I'm not sure. It was cute, though, and I hope it captures the imagination of the younger kids and imparts to them the magic that is Pooh Bear, like it did for me and others of my generation.

3.) It's not too long either at 63 minutes. It's just the right amount of 100 Acre Wood fun in one sitting! There is humor for all ages to enjoy. I cracked up at the see-saw/beehive scene. The songs are great! The Backson debacle is hilarious, especially the song. Has to be my favorite song in the movie. The Honey Song is also simply great, especially the intro. It's too much honey! Well, if that's possible.

This is good, lighthearted fun. I really hope they keep this formula and make a new one every two or three years for awhile. Three more like this and we will have a great collection! It would be something great to look forward to!

"Pooh gets the honey... ENJOY."

1.) Like “Song of the Sea,” this film for our family was profoundly moving, visually stunning, entertaining, mystical, and very heartwarming. It was also a great departure from the usual animations that adopt the Disney formula, which might be a turn-off for viewers that either prefer cookie-cutter endings or dislike the more mentally-engaged consumer experience (where audiences have to do a bit of deductive reasoning). For us, though, this film was a welcomed departure as it allowed us to discuss real life topics with our kids (teenager and 5-year-old) that even adults have difficulty reconciling. The most notable one was that of personal loss, specifically the loss of a loved one. This by far was the film’s greatest strength as Kubo shows us how to properly grieve and mourn, as well as how to move on.

2.) At the beginning of the film Kubo was consumed with questions of why, as in why was he stuck with such personal sadness; by the end, he found the strength and courage to transition himself to questions of how, as in how to move on from his loss (e.g., his surprising actions and those of the villagers at the end of the film simply reflected how many Asian cultures try to deal positively with personal loss). That really struck a chord with our family, especially with our kids who greatly admired Kubo for his kindness, strength, and dedication to appreciating all that human life has to offer, even if that includes a life of emotional hardship.

With that said I would advise parents to screen the film first before showing it to their kids, in case their kids are not yet mentally and/or emotionally ready to handle such topics. Otherwise, it’s a beautiful film that will surely resonate with its viewers for many years to come.

3.) One of the best animations I have seen. Definitely the best American Animation, even ranking up there with many Japanese Animations. The story shows love, determination, family, loss, and forgiveness. Kubo is lovable from the start, and characters have level of depth not seen in cinema today. I believe parents will enjoy this movie just as much, if not more than their children.

Customer Review

1.) I have been hearing many good things about this movie, and I have finally gotten the opportunity to see it. Here are my thoughts on the movie Paddington.

The movie opens and we see a bit of old footage showing a man by the name of Montgomery Clyde who is exploring Peru. He soon comes across two bears; and upon further realization he soon discovers that they not only can talk, but they also have taken a liking to the fruit preserve marmalade. Montgomery decides to name the bears Pastuzo and Lucy and years later Lucy and Pastuzo are shown to be taking care of their nephew. After Lucy later sends their nephew off to London, he is struggling to find shelter until a chance meeting with the Brown family changes everything.

I must admit I did not expect to enjoy Paddington as much as I did. Actor Ben Whishaw lends his vocal talents starring as Paddington and does a fabulous job voicing the bear.Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins portray Henry and Mary Brown, and Nicole Kidman gives Paddington an exceptional performance in her role as the antagonist Millicent Clyde.

2.) I remember watching the original Paddington bear series and loving it as a child, and had low hopes for this film since so many movies and stories that once were old, are being remade into new and tend to be far off or end up being a waste.

Not this one.

I feel they did a great job with this film. It wasnt too overly sugar coated or full of bells and whistles. It was just right. Cute comedy, warm hearted touching scenes with adventure and mischief. I honestly thought my kids wouldnt be interested in watching it (twin 7yr olds) but they were glued to the tv the whole time, giggling away and it kept me entertained as well. Very happy I purchased this, it went beyond my hopes for what I was expecting since everyone seems to be doing remakes/reboots of older children stories/movies and they flop, disappoint or just too overly done.

I had been wanting to get some new movies to enjoy with my kids and this one hit the spot. Looking to watch it many more times.

3.) As a Paddington fan since I was little, I loved this movie. Unlike the books, Paddington's origin is fleshed out and explained in detail, which is necessary to what happens in the story later on. Much of it is funny and the cast is wonderful, but because it is a combination of live action and CGI, I don't know that it would fully hold the attention of kids younger than about 9. Also, some scenes might be a bit upsetting for younger kids: there's a huge earthquake that results in a character's death, and the baddie is bent on collecting exotic animals and cutting them up to stuff. You don't actually see any taxidermy, but the implication is there. Aside from that, it's a great family movie that we will watch over and over.
